1. Mount Fuji Hiking Trail

Location : Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefectures, Japan

Mount Fuji has a height of about 12,388 meters above sea level, and is a famous icon of Japan. The mountain is still active today, and is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Japan. The trails leading to Mount Fuji are color coded for each trail. The Kumano Kodo Trail is a route usually used by pilgrims, and has been in use for about 1000 years. On this pilgrimage route there are three temples which are the center of this religious journey. The three shrines are Hongu Taisha, Hayatama Taisha, and Nachi Taisha, the three of which are usually referred to as Kumano Sanzan.

There are about five hiking trails in Kumano Kodo, and the most famous of them is Nakaheci. The Nakahechi Line is a path that is still maintained today with roads passing through forests and villages. This trail usually takes five days, but you can also take a shorter route.

The Nakasendo Line is the most popular route among local and foreign tourists. The winding roads offer views of the mountains, countryside, ancient forests, as well as small rivers. The Kamikochi hiking trail is part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, precisely in a valley of the Azusa River with an altitude of about 1500 meters above sea level. This route can only be reached by bus or taxi, while private cars are prohibited from entering.
